The town was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Clevedon was a popular seaside resort during the nineteenth-century. Clevedon Pier opened in 1869 and is Grade I listed. The Royal Pier Hotel is Grade II listed and was built in 1823. The seafront in the town includes a Victorian bandstand, tennis courts, crazy golf, a bowling green and ornamental gardens.
